What We Believe

"What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us." - A.W. Tozer

Core Beliefs

The following are the core beliefs of Waverly Community Church based on the foundational truths taught in the bible. All of our teaching and ministry is rooted in and flows out of these biblical doctrines.

God

There is one eternally existing God who has three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He is the creator of all that exists, both visible and invisible, and is therefore worthy of all glory and praise.  God is perfect in love, power, holiness, goodness, knowledge, wisdom,  justice, and mercy. He is unchangeable and therefore is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

The Bible

We believe all scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that men and women of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Sin/Satan

Satan and sin separate us from God since the fall of man (Gen. 3:5-6). Through repentance and salvation, a believer receives forgiveness of sin, reconciling them to God.

Salvation

Jesus Christ came to reconcile us with God. He lived a life without sin and willingly suffered and died on the cross to pay the penalty for our transgressions. God raised him from the dead and now, by grace, offers as a free gift eternal life to all who believe and follow Christ, by faith, as their Lord and Savior. That is why salvation can be found in Christ alone.

Baptism/The Lord's Supper

The ordinances of water baptism and the Lord's supper were and are significant to the church and within the lives of those who have faith in, and have committed themselves to Christ. Baptism is an outward expression of a believer's faith. The Lord's supper is taken in remembrance of the sacrifice made by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and open to all those who have recognized their sinful state and have accepted Christ. We believe that immersion was the common practice in the early church, but circumstances regarding health, age, or other extraordinary situations may require alternate forms of water baptism. In the end, it is repentance and the desire of one's heart, not the form of a physical act that fulfills Christ's instruction to mankind. The mode of baptism and partaking of the Lord's supper, therefore, are to be left to the leading of the Holy Spirit and understanding of each individual.

The Church

We believe in the Holy Christian Church, the framework which can be found in the Bible for the new testament church; a body of universal believers united in faith, dedicated to supporting each other, furthering the Gospel to all races and nationalities; providing love, peace, service, and sharing the Gospel to individuals who are needy, hurting, rejected and spiritually lost. The church is not a building or denomination, but a body of believers with Christ as the Head and Chief Cornerstone.

Ressurection/Eternal Judgement

We believe in the Resurrection and Eternal Judgement; that the small and the great, the just and the unjust, will stand before the throne of God, where the book of life will be opened and all will be judged out of those things which are written thereof. We believe in Heaven and Hell, and that each individual will inherit one of these for all eternity, following the final judgement.
